My Story
Hello! I’m Professor Hong Zhang. I am a professional singer in the United States. Early in my career, I sang with the Shanghai Philharmonic Society. I received a Master of Music degree in Voice Performance from Binghamton University, the State University of New York, and a Bachelor of Music degree in Voice Performance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Today, I’m an active singer on the domestic and international stages: I have given hundreds of concerts, solo performances, lectures, and teacher workshops at universities and concert halls in the U.S. and China. I also gave a lecture-recital titled “China’s Ethnic Groups and Their Songs” at the Headquarters of the United Nations.
In addition to performing, I also love teaching. As a veteran teacher, I have taught numerous students, many of whom have won international awards. Currently a tenured professor at Binghamton University, I have received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. In addition, I co-authored two books: Chinese through Song (SUNY Press, 2010, 2014) and Cultural Chinese: Art, Literature, and History (University of Georgetown Press, 2012).
